Laurence Lessig on Ted

Adaptable Bus Stop

Another interesting project from the allmighty MIT is this bus stop. A giant touch screen interface that allowes much more than just giving information about the busses. What I like about this project is that it also includes public messaging/communication. The fact that it allowes you to use it as a large screen for your mobile just adds to its value.

You can read more about it on this dedicated website.

Timetravel on the Underground

As I thought about making an (interactive) time related map for the underground/metro in Brussels, I got to this example of somebody who tried sort of the same thing for the London Underground. I think he made some mistakes in his thinking, but you can judge for yourself here.

MIT Real Time Rome

Surfing arround looking for information on cartography, time and public areas, I got to this site on a project by the MIT, named Real Time Rome. I think it’s great to see the city-life come to live/alive. The flux of people public transport, …, I find it all rather interesting.

At the moment I’m looking for a project I can propose as a master proof. Anybody who can give me any info on cartography and time is welcome to post a comment or mail me!

Free Font Tool

Tired of spending a lot of money on software? The web has the answer! I will publish more posts on free software, but this time all of my attention goes out to the font addicted students out there. FontForge should be a really good(and free) alternative that could make you forget all those worries about getting your hands on that good old (but expensive) Fontlab!

Enjoy!

Integrated 2007

Integrated2007 is a new vital international design conference taking place in deSingel Antwerp on Friday 2 & Saturday 3 November 2007.

The theme of the conference deals with the fascinating area between graphic design, typography, new media, architecture, advertising, art and other disciplines. Are these cross media phenomena evolving into a new design attitude, that of ‘integrated design’ or not? Maybe being ‘disintegrated’ could be more inspiring? Up to 20 speakers from different countries are expected. Integrated2007 will welcome students, teachers, designers, artists, architects and other cross media addicts.

Personally I am looking forward to hearing Femke Snelting and the people from PubliActie, because of their interest in everything that has something to do with open source software (for designers), free fonts, … you will find interesting links when you look for the info about the speakers!

The War Tapes

Deborah Scranton wanted to make a documentary about the war in Iraq. Not so unusual?! That is except for the way she got her images. Deborah asked the National Guardsmen to carry cameras with them, in order to make a film from the inside out.

The soldiers film the battlefield, the Iraqis, their fellow soldiers, themselves, … in order to show what the media on the outside of the camp walls never mention.

Want to know more about this? Watch her talk about it + the trailer at TED.com!

Bombing El Corte Ingles (Barcelona)

GRL has been bombing Barcelona … well I could tell you all about it, but who needs words when you can show a video!

The Web a Mighty Weapon

Sure you have heard about what is going on in Myanmar! But have you seen the images? Yes, thanks to modern technology, the web, sites like YouTube, … . Even now, as the government has blocked all internet access, people smuggle pictures and videos across the digital boundary using mobile phones.

This way the web has proven itself ,once again, a great weapon for the general public to fight anti-democratic governments.
